McKeon rests Vaughn
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Leg-weary left fielder Greg Vaughn missed his second consecutive start on Wednesday night as manager Jack McKeon continued trying to keep his starters fresh.
Vaughn pinch-hit in Tuesday night's 10th inning and drew a leadoff walk that ignited Cincinnati's two-run, go-ahead rally.
McKeon said he really wants to rest shortstop Barry Larkin, who has played in every game while missing just one start. He'll do it today if second baseman Pokey Reese's bruised left hand is better. Reese probably likely would replace Larkin at shortstop while Chris Stynes would play second.
It's a bad break, McKeon said of Reese's injury, which he suffered in Monday night's series opener when he was hit by an Ismael Valdes pitch. But we've been able to win two games without him.
