At the plate
The Giants are scoring runs at a good rate, second in the NL. That's impressive, considering their best player, Barry Bonds, missed 53 games. Bonds is batting .100 (4-for-40) in his last 12 games. There's plenty of pop throughout the Giants lineup: Jeff Kent (13 HRs, 63 RBI), Ellis Burks (15 HRs, 52 RBI), Rich Aurilia (15 HRs, 49 RBI), J.T. Snow (12 HRs, 64 RBI).
On the mound
Today: Steve Avery (6-7, 4.96 ERA) vs. Chris Brock (5-8, 5.54)
Saturday: Pete Harnisch (9-6, 3.50 ERA) vs. Mark Gardner (3-8, 6.73)
Sunday: Steve Parris (7-1, 3.54) vs. Shawn Estes (6-6, 5.37)
The Reds miss the Giants' big winners: Russ Ortiz (12-6) and Kirk Rueter (8-4).
Outlook
The Reds opened the season with the Giants, whose three-game sweep of the Reds and made the bullpen look bad by scoring 26 runs. Dusty Baker is probably Jack McKeon's top competition for manager of the year.
