SCOUTING REPORT

Reds (22-21) at Marlins (15-32)

        • Where: Pro Player Stadium, Miami.

        • When: 7:05 p.m. today and Saturday, 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

        • Radio: WLW-AM (700).

        • TV: Fox Sports Net Ohio, Saturday and Sunday.

At the plate
None of the Marlins' regulars is batting higher than .300, explaining why their .251 team average ranked next-to-last in the league before Thursday's games.

Florida has a pair of Rookie of the Year candidates in shortstop Alex Gonzalez and Preston Wilson. Gonzalez leads all NL rookies with 53 hits and 87 total bases while contributing highlight-film defense. He also leads the team with 20 RBI. Wilson's 11 homers tops all major-league rookies.

Former Cub Kevin Orie is hitting .277 with 12 doubles. Cliff Floyd, who was expected to be a force, has recovered gradually after beginning the season with an injured left knee and is batting .272 with four homers and 19 RBI.

On the mound
        • Today: Steve Avery (3-3, 2.61) vs. Ryan Dempster (1-1, 4.50).

        • Saturday: Jason Bere (2-0, 6.61) vs. Alex Fernandez (1-2, 2.33)

        • Sunday: Steve Parris (3-0, 3.68) vs. Dennis Springer (1-6, 4.80).

Tonight's starter for the Marlins, Ryan Dempster, faced the Reds once last year, allowing five earned runs in 3 innings while receiving no decision.

Alex Fernandez, who was on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder last month, has pitched capably when healthy, striking out 21 batters while walking just eight in 27 innings.

Outlook
The Reds won all nine games they played against Florida last year, batting .352.
