Cobb lost two hits from career total

BY JOHN ERARDI
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ty Cobb's actual hit total was 4,189 — not 4,191 — as so many Cincinnatians came to memorize it.

Wait. Didn't Pete Rose break Cobb's all-time hit total with his 4,192nd “knock” Sept.11, 1985?

Well, yes, at the time, he did.

But years later, the Society for American Baseball Research discovered — by digging through 24 years' worth of daily box scores — that Cobb had been credited with two extra hits.

For Tony Gwynn, Sept.11, 1985, always will be the magic night.

“As outfielders, we talked before the game about running the ball back into the infield, and maybe having a chance to give it to him,” Gwynn said. “But Pete came around first like he was going for two, and Carmelo (Martinez) had to turn and wheel and get it in. That was Pete Rose.”
