REDS NOTEBOOK

Wohlers returns to work with Gullett

Like a lot of things in life, Mark Wohlers' trial performance Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis seemed like a good idea at the time but, might have been better off delayed.

Wohlers returned to Cinergy Field on Monday and agreed with pitching coach Don Gullett's assessment that the talented, but erratic, right-hander hadn't regained enough consistency with his mechanics and control to perform in a game.

Wohlers, who's technically on the disabled list with an anxiety disorder, will resume working with Gullett before Reds games to refine his techniques, beginning with a bullpen session today.

“One thing that I realized is, I'm in the position right now where I can't focus on results,” Wohlers said, one day after allowing four runs and one hit, issuing five walks and throwing four wild pitches in one-third of an inning. “My concentration needs to be on the effort. And the effort always has been and always will be there.”

New lineup
Manager Jack McKeon changed the lineup for the second time in as many days in an attempt to revive the Reds' offense.

Center fielder Mike Cameron, who had led off in each of his last 21 starts, batted second. Right fielder Michael Tucker moved to the top of the order.

Shortstop Barry Larkin dropped to sixth after batting .182. This position wasn't unusual for Larkin, who hit sixth in 10 games last year.

Catcher Eddie Taubensee moved up to fifth, where he batted .265 (13-for-49) last year.

Belinda's battle
Reliever Stan Belinda has lifted plenty of arm weights. He has played catch while refraining from throwing hard since his recent setback. But he still hasn't made steady progress from the shoulder tendinitis that has kept him on the DL since March 24.

“I'll feel good for one, two or three days and then horrible for the next three or four days,” he said. “It's one of those things I can't explain. I've never felt anything like it.”

Belinda said the residual effects of multiple sclerosis, which he was diagnosed with last September, haven't been a factor.

Up next
Jason Bere (2-0, 6.00 ERA) faces Arizona left-hander Omar Daal (2-2, 3.34) as the series continues 7:05 p.m. today.
