Though the setting wasn't totally major league, the Reds received encouragement Saturday when left-hander Denny Neagle pitched six scoreless innings against his teammates in an intrasquad scrimmage with Triple-A Indianapolis in Sarasota, Fla.
Neagle threw only 55 pitches in the seven-inning 0-0 tie. Don Gullett had prescribed 25-to-30 more pitches.
But it could have been worse for Neagle, who will start the season on the disabled list as he continues to strength en the muscles in the back of his left shoulder.
He allowed four hits doubles by Barry Larkin and Michael Tucker and singles by Brian Johnson and Pokey Reese and struck out one. Eligible to come off the disabled list April 10, Neagle will make at least one more tuneup appearance before the Reds decide whether to return him immediately to the starting rotation or give him a rehabilitation assignment in the minors.
Each of the Reds relievers also appeared, including Scott Sullivan, who hadn't pitched since March 24 because of a left hamstring strain. Sullivan worked two innings, as did left-hander Gabe White.
Jeffrey Hammonds, who left Friday's game with a tight right hamstring muscle, singled in his only plate appearance.
