Reds' new screen worthy of its own highlight reel
BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Fans will be able to see Reds highlights in the daylight on Opening Day, thanks to a new state-of-art jumbo screen the Reds have installed at Cinergy Field and can take with them to their new stadium.
It's unbelievable, Managing Executive John Allen said. It's brighter, clearer. You can see it in the sun, from the side views. It's a major improvement.
The new screen, made by SACO SmartVision of Montreal, replaces the Sony JumboTron.
The JumboTron was installed in 1987 and upgraded in 1992, but in recent years, it was difficult to see, particularly in the day. The new screen uses LED technology; the old system used a cathode-ray tube.
The new screen will be the first in Major League Baseball.
We got a great price on it, Mr. Allen said, because they want to sell it to other teams.
Under the current stadium lease, the Reds have control over the scoreboard. Mr. Allen would not say how much the team paid for the 24-by-32-foot expandable screen.
Another selling point was the fact that the Reds can take the board to the new stadium.
The life of the new screen is about 60,000 hours. Mr. Allen said the Reds would use about 24,000 hours at Cinergy. We've tested and it's worked perfectly, he said. Fans are really going to love it.
