Opening Day roster firming up

BY CHRIS HAFT

How will the Reds' Opening Day roster look? Wednesday's transactions, the uncertain status of players the Reds have tried to trade and General Manager Jim Bowden's position-by-position outline made the team easy to predict.

Bowden said Wednesday that the Reds probably will begin the season with 10 pitchers, seven infielders, six outfielders and two catchers. “That may change in a week,” he said.

Steve Parris, who starts tonight against Pittsburgh, still could pitch his way onto the team. And the Reds might beg infielder Jeff Branson to stick around if somebody suffers an injury.

Otherwise, here's the group that's likely to line up April 5 at Cinergy Field:

        • Pitchers (10): Steve Avery, Jason Bere, Danny Graves, Pete Harnisch, John Hudek, Dennys Reyes, Scott Sullivan, Brett Tomko, Gabe White, Scott Williamson.

        • Catchers (2): Brian Johnson, Eddie Taubensee.

        • Infielders (7): Aaron Boone, Sean Casey, Barry Larkin, Mark Lewis, Hal Morris, Pokey Reese, Chris Stynes.

        • Outfielders (6): Mike Cameron, Jeffrey Hammonds, Mark Sweeney, Michael Tucker, Greg Vaughn, Dmitri Young.
