The Cincinnati Reds
Wednesday, March 24, 1999

Reds 13, Twins 2

        • Record: 10-11

        • The arms: Jason Bere worked a spring-high six innings, managing to pitch out of trouble while allowing five hits and walking three. The most impressive of the three relievers was rookie right-hander Scott Williamson, who looked absolutely unhittable.

        • The bats: Every starter except Greg Vaughn, who handled designated-hitter chores, contributed to the Reds' hit total as they established spring highs for runs, hits and runs in an inning (six, in the third). Eight of Cincinnati's hits went for extra bases, including a homer and a triple by Jeffrey Hammonds.

        • The rest: The Reds weren't perfect. Michael Tucker missed a hit-and-run sign, causing Aaron Boone to get thrown out at second base. Two other Reds were thrown out between third base and home, partly due to confusion over third-base coach Harry Dunlop's traffic directions, and two more were caught trying to steal.

        • Up next: Today at 1:05 p.m. against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Sarasota, Fla. Steve Avery will face Devil Rays ace Rolando Arrojo.
