The Cincinnati Reds
Monday, March 22, 1999

Rangers 5, Reds 3

        • Record: 9-11

        • The arms: Aside from Pete Harnisch and Dennys Reyes, no news was good news. Scott Williamson pitched his third shutout inning in four days before Gabe White and Danny Graves stifled Texas in the final two innings, just as the Reds hope they'll do in the regular season.

        • The bats: Sporting a .299 team average through last Wednesday, the Reds have since dropped to .278. The absence of right fielder Dmitri Young, who has missed five games in a row with a sore left knee, has been a factor.

        • The rest: Greg Vaughn, who insisted he's decent on defense, proved it by handling a variety of plays smoothly for all three third-inning putouts. Cincinnati has lost three games in a row and nine of its last 11.

        • Up next: Following today's scheduled off-day, the only one of the spring, the Reds will play a “B” game and a regularly scheduled exhibition Tuesday in Ft. Myers, Fla., against Minnesota.
