The Cincinnati Reds
Saturday, March 20, 1999

Red Sox 6, Reds 5

        • Reds record: 9-9

        • The arms: Steve Avery allowed opposing pitcher Pat Rapp to drive in the first run by singling on an 0-2 pitch and ex-Red Darren Lewis homered off Avery. Brian Daubach's three-run homer off John Hudek in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie before Keith Mitchell's homer off Mark Thompson in the 11th won it.

        • The bats: Barry Larkin had a two-run double in the third inning. But that was Cincinnati's only extra-base hit.

        • The rest: Rookie Scott Williamson and Dennys Reyes each worked an inning, giving them appearances in consecutive games and reflecting the seriousness of their bids to make the team as relievers.

        • Up next: Today against the Texas Rangers in Port Charlotte, Fla. Steve Parris is scheduled to start against Texas' Rick Helling.
