Reds 2, Yankees 1
Reds record: 9-8
The arms: Jason Bere's only mistake was an 0-1 pitch that Bernie Williams knocked over the right-field wall leading off the fourth inning. Left-hander Dennys Reyes lacked consistency, striking out Paul O'Neill and Williams before issuing consecutive walks. Scott Williamson, Danny Graves and Gabe White (second save) were efficient.
The bats: They were nonexistent as David Cone threw a five-inning perfect game for the defending world champions. The Reds began the game with a .299 team batting average, fourth-best in the National League. But they didn't come close to mustering a hit against Cone, who threw 58 pitches, including 36 strikes. One out after Cone departed, Brian Johnson doubled solidly to left-center off Dan Naulty.
The rest: After Aaron Boone doubled, backup shortstop Alfonso Soriano committed back-to-back throwing errors with two outs in the eighth, accounting for Cincinnati's runs. The Reds ended a four-game losing streak.
Up next: Tonight against the Boston Red Sox in Sarasota, Fla at 7:05. Steve Avery vs. Boston's Pat Rapp.
