Reds 2, Rangers 1
Reds record: 6-2.
The arms: Brett Tomko was encouraged by his progress in his three shutout innings. My changeup was better, my curveball was better, and I was spotting my fastball pretty well, he said.
The bats: Cincinnati advanced only two runners into scoring position before overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the ninth. Mark Sweeney walked and Jeffrey Hammonds singled with one out off Brandon Knight.
Rangers reliever Doug Davis fanned pinch-hitter Damon Hollins, but Brook Fordyce singled to right field on an 0-2 pitch, scoring pinch-runner Pokey Reese and moving Hammonds to third. On another 0-2 pitch, Dmitri Young hit a slow chopper toward third base and beat it out as Hammonds scored the winning run.
The rest: It was a bad night for fundamentals. Texas broke a scoreless tie with an unearned run in the eighth after Mike Zywica grounded to third baseman Aaron Boone with two outs and runners on first and second.
Though Boone threw low to first base, Zywica received credit for a hit.
Gregg Zaun, the runner on second, rounded third and scored when catcher Fordyce failed to hold first baseman Sweeney's throw. Also, two Reds baserunners were picked off.
Up next: Today against Detroit. Jason Bere will start against Detroit's Bryce Florie, with Japanese sensation Masao Kida expected to pitch in relief for the Tigers.
