Pirates 3, Reds 2

        • Reds record: 5-2.

        • The arms: Pittsburgh broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning against Dennys Reyes, who struggled with his breaking pitches and yielded two runs on four hits. Rookie Scott Williamson, a non-roster invitee who had wowed onlookers with his velocity (five strikeouts in two shutout innings), allowed his first run of the spring.

        • The bats: The Reds had seven hits in the first four innings and moved four runners into scoring position but couldn't score. Greg Vaughn singled in his first two at-bats, which pleased manager Jack McKeon.

“I was talking to (Toronto assistant general manager) Dave Stewart yesterday and he said, "Don't worry about him. About the last eight or 10 games he gets ready for the season.'”

        • The rest: Responding to chants of “Clean the plate!” from neatness freaks in the crowd of 2,627, catcher Eddie Taubensee drew cheers when he brushed off home plate in the top of the sixth inning. Taubensee received more applause as he returned to the Reds dugout and politely doffed his cap.

        • Up next: Tonight at 7:05 against the Texas Rangers, who will start Esteban Loaiza against Brett Tomko.
