Reds record: 2-1.
The arms: Against Texas, Brett Tomko sailed through three scoreless innings but was removed after the first two Rangers reached base in a four-run fourth, which unfolded against left-hander Joey Eischen. But the next four relievers combined for six innings of shutout ball. Against Minnesota, starter Steve Parris and reliever John Hudek each allowed two-run homers, dooming the Reds.
The bats: Besides pounding out 15 hits against the Rangers, the Reds received sacrifice bunts from Tomko and Reese, displaying improvement in an area that plagued them last year. None of Cincinnati's 11 hits against Minnesota went for extra bases.
The rest: Maintaining the hard-work attitude of this training camp, Barry Larkin and Greg Vaughn asked manager Jack McKeon to put them in the starting lineup against Texas, though they were slated to have the day off.
Up next: Today at home against Boston. Jason Bere will oppose Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez.
