Allen would likely survive sale
Dolans value experience
BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
If the Dolans succeed in buying the Reds next month from Marge Schott, don't expect the Cleveland family to dismiss employees already in the organization.
At least one Reds' limited partner has expressed a fear the Dolans would oust managing executive John Allen.
But sources close to Larry Dolan and his family said Thursday Allen would stay with the Reds in some kind of capacity if the $65 million deal is completed. Also, they said Allen isn't mentioned in the letter of intent Schott has signed with Dolan.
The sources say the Dolans would be looking to add to the operation and would value the experience of those already in place.
Paul Dolan, Larry's son, wouldn't comment on the subject except to say he has an idea of how his father will staff the club.
By hiring or retaining appropriate professional people to do the job, Paul Dolan said. It will be a family-owned business as opposed to family run, although we'll be involved. We're going to have baseball people. We don't have any preconceived notions.
Paul Dolan, 40, said it shouldn't be assumed he'll run the club day-to-day for his 68-year-old father. He said the family will surround itself with competent, experienced people.
Paul Dolan emphasized the family has high regard for Cincinnati's baseball tradition and has experienced it in trips to Riverfront Stadium (now Cinergy Field) through the years.
When Paul was 12, he was in the stands at the 1970 All-Star Game when he watched the Reds' Pete Rose run over Cleveland catcher Ray Fosse on the game's final play.
I hope to have a different perspective on that play now, he said with a laugh.
The sale can't be formalized until after the March 8 Reds' partners' meeting, where the limiteds could decide to match the offer or delay a decision.
