Rose won't manage; will instruct

The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Pete Rose is returning to baseball as a part-time hitting instructor for an independent minor league team that isn't covered by the ban imposed on baseball's hit king in 1989.

Bruce Portner, owner of the Sacramento Steelheads of the Western League, said Rose turned down an offer to manage the new team. But Portner said the former Reds player/manager agreed a personal-services contract that will include participating in three to four days of hitting clinics for Steelhead players in April.

Rose will also throw out the first pitch at the Steelheads home opener on May 28 and make other appearances. Portner said Rose decided he had too many other commitments to manage the team this season.
