The Reds-Indians series, one of the highlights of the 1998 season, will be a home-and-away affair in 1999.

'99 SCHEDULE
Next year, they'll play three games in Cincinnati the weekend of June 11-13 and three in Cleveland the weekend of July 9-11 heading into the All-Star break.

The schedule, released on the Reds Web site, begins Monday, April 5, with the traditional Opening Day against the San Francisco Giants.

It wraps up Oct. 3 against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The Indians are the only American League team the Reds play twice. They play all the American League Central teams except the Chicago White Sox.

There had been talk about trying to enhance natural geographic rivalries in interleague play; at least here, it appears that is a reality..

The Reds and Indians met for the first time in interleague play at Jacobs Field in 1997. the Indians made their first appearance at Cinergy Field last season.

The series in Cincinnati last season was one of the Reds' biggest draws of the season. The three games on June 5-7 drew 144,917, the Reds' best three-game draw in 24 years.

The teams are 3-3 in their two-year series.

The Reds open the season with three games against San Francisco and 12 of their first 22 at home.

Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs make their first visit for a weekend series May 7-9. Mark McGwire and the St. Louis Cardinals have their first series in Cincinnati on June 21-22.

McGwire hit a record 70 homers last season but none in Cincinnati. He has never homered at Cinergy Field.

The National League champion San Diego Padres will visit for the first time on May 14-16.

The Reds' final home series will be a four-game set against the Cards on Sept. 24-27.
