At the plate
Watch two Guerreros for the price of one. Outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, just 22 years old and the National League player of the month for July, is hitting .335 with 27 homers and 85 RBI. He is second in the NL in hits (155) and multi-hit games (50), and fourth in batting average and slugging percentage (.597). His older brother, second baseman Wilton Guerrero, is hitting .289 overall and has hit in all 10 games since coming to Montreal from Los Angeles in a July 31 trade. The Expos also have rookie first baseman Brad Fullmer, who leads all rooks in doubles (36) and is third with a .285 batting average. But outfielder Rondell White (.300, 17 homers, 58 RBI) is out for the season with a fractured right ring finger.
On the mound
Closer Ugueth Urbina, Montreal's only All-Star, is fifth in the NL with 26 saves.
Outlook
The Reds have won two of the three games this season against the Expos. This series is interesting not because of the teams, but because of the matchups of individual, young potential stars: the Guerreros, Fullmer and Hermanson for Montreal, and the likes of Sean Casey, Dmitri Young and Tomko for the Reds. |
