The Padres lead the National League West by eight games and have the second-best record in the National League, behind Atlanta. Their left fielder, Greg Vaughn, is hitting .299 with 30 homers and 99 RBI, but perennial star Tony Gwynn has slumped lately. His average has dropped to .310. Third baseman Ken Caminiti, a former league MVP, has raised his average from .240 to .285 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. He hit three homers in one game last Sunday. First baseman Wally Joyner is solid (.319, 7 HR, 54 RBI).

Outlook
The Padres have won eight of nine against Cincinnati this seaon, but the Reds are red-hot now, winners of 15 of the last 16. The last time these teams played (a Padres sweep in mid-June), the Reds were in the midst of losing 19 of 22.
But that was before the Reds got hot, before they started to believe in themselves and before they were infused with the talents of Sean Casey, Paul Konerko and Mike Frank. This series will be a good test to see if they can get in the hunt for the wild card. |
