The series
The Padres have RF Tony Gwynn (.350), 1B Wally Joyner (.318) and LF Greg Vaughn (.282, 22 HR, 56 RBI), but still have a lower batting average than the Reds (.259 to .256). 3B Ken Caminiti, who destroyed the Reds with long balls in early April, has been hurt and is hitting only .241 with seven homers and 28 RBI. CF Steve Finley was at .239 with only four homers and 26 RBI before a 4-for-5, five-RBI Sunday at Texas.

Outlook
The Padres got off to a hot start in April, thanks to taking five of six from the Reds in the season's first two weeks, but have slowed since and been overtaken for first in the West by the Giants. Still, San Diego is a team to be reckoned with, and one the Reds have had trouble beating.
